Elena Rybakina and Magdalena Frech meet in Cincinnati with the winner already settled in the market's mind: the Kazakh has taken all three of their previous matches and is priced as a formality. The interesting number is the one attached to her, not her name. The line demands a six-game gap, and Rybakina's recent tennis has not been built that way.
A worn favourite and a functioning underdog
Rybakina's Canadian week ended in a final and included three three-set matches, and by the close of it her first serve had lost some of its bite. There was almost no recovery time before Cincinnati. She has been giving away opening sets even to lower-ranked opponents and winning through the second half of matches rather than through early damage.
Frech, meanwhile, arrived in working order and handled Ostapenko without drama. She returns deep, lifts the ball, changes height and direction, and makes opponents hit the same winner two or three times. Against Pegula she took the first set in consecutive meetings, so access to opening sets against top players clearly exists.
Where those six games are supposed to come from
One tight set is enough here. Their last meeting, in Washington, finished with a margin of exactly six games, right on the edge of this line, and that was before the schedule caught up with Rybakina. A tiebreak, or a 6-4 in either set, keeps the handicap standing.
The risk is plain: a calibrated Rybakina serve turns this into a quick 6-2 6-3, and Frech's flaw is fading once rallies shorten. The value still sits with the underdog's cushion.
