What makes the Eliminator interesting is that the two failure modes are not identical twins. Colombo Kaps collapse in clusters; Kandy Royals go frantic. Knockout cricket usually punishes the second one harder.
Colombo Kaps: a new captain and an old fault line
The Kaps arrive here missing their leading batter and original leader. Kusal Mendis picked up a right-hamstring injury in the league meeting with Kandy and is done for the tournament, with Kamindu Mendis stepping up as captain (lankapremierleaguet20.com).

Sadeera Samarawickrama keeps the gloves as a result, and Colombo have been shuffling Rubin Hermann, Sadeera and Ben McDermott through flexible top-order combinations. McDermott came back in as the batting-side substitution last time out, which tells you how Colombo intend to use the impact slot: an extra hitter when they bat, an extra seamer when they don't.
Their last league chase was a compressed version of everything good and bad about them. Sadeera and McDermott began briskly, then spin removed Kamindu and Ashen Bandara in quick succession and the middle order lost wickets in a cluster instead of resetting; Malsha Tharupathi's lower-order counterattack kept it alive, but that was repair work, not control.

Then came Jaffna, the other Kandy. The attack allowed a huge platform and could not contain the late acceleration, and in the chase the middle order kept swinging while Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage picked up wickets — Shaheen was even promoted as a pinch-hitter to disrupt the spinners. Intent, yes; structure, no.
So the pattern is clear enough: elite names in the attack, an in-form opener at the top, and an order that becomes over-aggressive the moment spin lands two wickets in a short burst.
Premadasa after dark: the strip nobody has seen
This is the first day of the playoff leg at R. Premadasa, with the league stage played at SSC, Dambulla and Pallekele. The venue's current-season reputation is for a surface that grips as the ball loses hardness, with cloud cover offering seamers a little early movement.
The same-day complication: the afternoon Qualifier at this ground played much better for stroke-making than the stereotypical slow Premadasa pitch, which suggests a firm, well-prepared square.
