Korneeva opened in Seoul with a controlled 6-4, 6-2 win over world No. 88 Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Her movement, reliable return and measured baseline pressure suit hard courts, while victories over Iva Jovic and Emma Navarro in Toronto showed the level available when that structure holds.
Astakhova arrived through qualifying before edging No. 74 Magda Linette 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, saving match points after failing to serve out the contest. It was not tidy, but tidy is hardly essential to her method: she extends rallies, keeps returning and makes service games take longer than scheduled.
The total leaves room for a stubborn set
Korneeva should control more exchanges, yet her second serve gives Astakhova a route into return games. Both players are comfortable making the opponent strike one extra ball, so breaks need not produce a brief match; they may simply produce more long games.
