Reds need Abbott to find the edges again
Cincinnati has been eliminated from postseason contention, leaving evaluation and development as the priorities down the stretch. Recent results have been volatile, with isolated power bursts surrounded by too many innings in which the Reds failed to build traffic against high-end pitching.
Andrew Abbott is listed to start on normal rest, though his previous outing ended at a career-short point. Fatigue was not the problem: his secondary pitches missed their intended spots, and too many fastballs finished in predictable parts of the strike zone.
Abbott gave the bluntest possible self-scout, telling mlb.com, “The only thing I did right was throw strikes.” Against a patient Dodgers order, strikes without location can become batting-practice invitations.
Elly De La Cruz remains Cincinnati’s quickest route to instant offense, while Eugenio Suárez has supplied recent power. Matt McLain is day to day with a sore left shoulder, and his availability would affect both the batting order and defensive alignment.
Monday’s long start from Nick Lodolo spared the bullpen, but Wednesday availability still depends on Tuesday’s usage. That uncertainty matters if Abbott again forces the Reds into damage-control innings before the middle of the game.
Dodgers can apply pressure without waiting for one big swing
The Dodgers have clinched a postseason berth but still have playoff positioning and bullpen roles to settle. Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernández have supplied the recent power, while the club also showed in the series opener that it is willing to press pitcher holds and catcher exchange times on the bases.

Blake Snell is listed to start for the Dodgers after an encouraging outing in which his elevated fastball and breaking pitches generated consistent misses. His post-surgical elbow history warrants routine monitoring, but no fresh setback or scratch signal has been reported.
Los Angeles has some late-inning uncertainty of its own after Edgardo Henriquez went on the injured list and Edwin Díaz remained on a rehabilitation assignment. That concern matters more to the final margin than to whether the Dodgers can reach their team-total target.
Heat and a short right field reward lifted contact
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET at Great American Ball Park, with the game moving from daylight into night conditions. Temperatures around 88–89°F and heavy humidity should matter more to ball carry than the light cross-field wind.
The park already favors home runs, particularly pulled left-handed fly balls toward the compact right-field side. A slight shower or thunderstorm chance exists, but the risk of a postponement is low.
This is the third game of a four-game series, with an early finale following Thursday. That schedule gives both clubs reason to rotate a catcher or rest a veteran, especially after the Dodgers secured their postseason place.
Predictable fastballs point toward a fifth Dodgers run
The central matchup is Abbott’s location against a lineup built to wait out marginal pitches and attack once the count narrows his choices. His last failure came from overfilling the zone rather than tired stuff, and there has been no game evidence yet of a correction.
Great American Ball Park offers little forgiveness if the fastball leaks into barrel height. Los Angeles can also create extra scoring chances through aggressive baserunning, forcing Cincinnati’s battery to execute holds, throws and tags instead of merely keeping the ball in the yard.

The clearest risk is a reduced Dodgers order, particularly if Freeman rests and other regulars receive post-clinch maintenance. A sharp Abbott rebound would also make the threshold less comfortable, while Tuesday’s bullpen usage remains an unresolved variable.
