Cardinals bring better at-bats back home
The Cardinals’ postseason pursuit is all but over, but their young lineup continues to play with purpose. They responded to the Giants’ one-run sweep by taking a home series from the White Sox, even if the offense and bullpen remained uneven.
Andre Pallante is listed by mlb.com to start on normal rest. He worked into the sixth against these Giants last week without issuing a walk, and the eventual collapse came after he departed.
Alec Burleson remains the steadiest middle-order bat, while rookie catcher Leo Bernal has homered twice recently, including once off Tidwell. Masyn Winn has returned following thumb discomfort, but Jordan Walker’s ankle and JJ Wetherholt’s possible activation remain among the Cardinals’ open questions on mlb.com.
Giants have energy, but Tidwell still needs strike one
The Giants swept the Cardinals last week in three one-run games, then dropped every game against the Padres. Their young hitters kept mounting late pushes, but early deficits repeatedly forced them to chase the scoreboard.
Blade Tidwell is listed to start the rematch on regular rest. His four-seam fastball and sweeping slider can miss bats, but inconsistent fastball command has pushed him into walks and uncomfortable counts.
The Cardinals saw the consequences six days ago, when Bernal drove a hanging breaking ball for a three-run homer and Tidwell compounded the trouble with a fielding mistake. He lasted four innings, with execution and composure—not health—driving the short outing.
Rafael Devers is the Giants’ central lineup check after receiving repeated rest for accumulated leg fatigue; Tony Vitello told sfchronicle.com, “I think he hit a little bit of a wall.” Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Harrison Bader remain out, leaving Bryce Eldridge and a reconstructed young core to carry much of the run production.
That group has competed, but several players are covering secondary defensive positions. Extra bases, aggressive first-to-third running and a well-placed bunt can turn ordinary contact into another stressful inning for Tidwell.
Busch may play smaller in the heat
This is Game 2 of a three-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:45 PM ET and an early finale following Wednesday. Twilight should give way to a hot night, while a late thunderstorm or delay remains possible.
Busch Stadium usually protects pitchers on marginal fly balls and rewards outfield range in its spacious gaps. Near-record heat can soften that suppression, giving well-barreled contact a better chance to carry.
A delay would also add another command test for Tidwell, whose delivery and fastball location have not always stayed synchronized. Pallante’s broader mix and more established routine make interruption less central to the Cardinals team-total angle.
The second look favors five Cardinals runs
Tidwell’s sweeper no longer arrives with mystery attached, and the Cardinals can counter it with left-handed and switch-hitting bats. Burleson, Nolan Gorman, Nathan Church and Bernal can make him locate the fastball or trust a less dependable changeup rather than letting him live off chase swings.
Walks would expose Tidwell from the stretch and put additional pressure on the Giants’ inexperienced defensive alignments. Add the hot conditions, and the Cardinals have several routes to a crooked inning before San Francisco’s committee bullpen takes over.
The team total keeps the wager trained on that matchup. Pallante may again contain the Giants, while the Cardinals’ unsettled late-inning hierarchy makes both the full-game total and a comfortable home win less clean.
The Giants’ bullpen availability cannot be finalized until the series opener’s workload is known, and the Cardinals still have lineup health questions. A late pitching change would not void this bet, so the listed starters and lineups require a game-day check.
