Connor Norby, Hunter Goodman, Kyle Karros and Ezequiel Tovar return to the posted lineup after sitting Sunday. Willi Castro remains unavailable, leaving the Rockies without another potential piece as they try to reset at home.
Padres are applying pressure before the seats are warm
The Padres arrive after sweeping the Giants and gaining breathing room in the National League Wild Card race. Their recent damage has come early, with Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Harris producing across the order.
Casey Mize remains listed to start after five full recovery days. His previous outing brought his best strikeout showing since joining the Padres, suggesting the sharper version of his fastball and secondary mix has returned.
Mize has resumed regular turns after an August ankle sprain and has no reported restriction, though the recent lower-body history is not entirely erased from the notebook. Behind him, Mason Miller and Adrian Morejón are better positioned after resting Sunday, while several middle relievers carry weekend mileage.
The posted lineup keeps Tatis, Harris and Machado at the top, with Ty France back at first base. That length matters against Sugano because the Padres can force him to show several pitches immediately rather than cruise through a soft pocket.
Warm air, wide gaps and a storm nearby
First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM ET, with temperatures around 82°F before easing through the middle innings. Thunderstorms could interrupt play, and Coors Field offers no roof or shelter from a badly timed patch of lightning.

Seven runs points straight at the Rockies’ relief bridge
The Padres’ team total isolates the cleanest part of the matchup. Sugano must control an aggressive top order in a park that punishes location mistakes, then hand the game to a bullpen carrying recent volume and the memory of a late collapse.
Sugano can make this uncomfortable if his splitter stays beneath the barrel and his slider avoids the middle. He is a composed veteran with enough variety to stop a right-handed-heavy order from sitting on one speed, so the Padres still need disciplined aggression rather than indiscriminate hacking.
If Sugano exits early, however, the available bridge is thin. Hill is a strong candidate to be unavailable, Agnos and Herget are reduced by Sunday’s workload, and the Padres have enough lineup depth to keep testing every arm that follows.
Backing the Padres’ scoring also avoids requiring much from the Rockies’ offense against Mize and the rested late-inning pair of Miller and Morejón. Seven runs is a proper Coors assignment, but this pitching chain gives the Padres several ways to reach it.
A weather delay is the clearest disruption risk because it can break the game’s rhythm and alter bullpen deployment. It could also shorten Sugano’s night, which would expose the precise weakness behind this selection.
