Warsaw momentum against a stuttering serve
Lee arrives with a game that keeps landing in the same place: deep, heavy, one ball more than the opponent wants to hit. She dropped the opening set in consecutive rounds in Warsaw and still lifted the title, closing out Gabriela Knutson 6-4 7-5 with the calm of a player who trusts her legs. In Cincinnati qualifying she took Polina Kudermetova to a deciding set, 4-6 7-6(5) 4-6.
Boulter's hard-court summer keeps stalling at exactly the moment she has to finish. In Toronto she served for the first set at 6-5 against Kayla Cross and still lost in straight sets; in Cincinnati she survived Katie Volynets after a 0-6 middle set, then fell to Linda Noskova 3-6 3-6. The first strike is still heavy. The second and third shots wander.
The rally that goes one ball too long
Boulter wants the point over by the third shot: big serve, step in, forehand. Lee's whole recent identity is refusing that invitation — absorbing pace, moving the ball wide, making an attacker attack again from an uncomfortable position. That is where Boulter's rhythm has cracked all summer.
The debutante nerves are real, and Lee did fade from winning positions against Marie Bouzkova in Prague. At this price, though, the fresher, steadier player is the one being asked to prove herself.
