San Francisco used Jason Foley, Ryan Walker, Spencer Bivens, Dylan Smith and Reiver Sanmartín behind Webb. Bivens and Smith absorbed the high-stress ninth, and several arms had already worked Monday. The result is a relief group entering this opener far more taxed than the D-backs'.
Manager Tony Vitello called the finish “more than unfortunate,” NBC Sports Bay Area reported. The clubhouse was silent afterward, a sign the collapse registered beyond routine disappointment. The Giants do not have a settled closer; matchup and freshness are driving the late-inning choices.
The lineup is heavily improvised. Willy Adames is on the injured list, Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt and Daniel Susac are out for the season, and Luis Arraez and Heliot Ramos were moved at the deadline. Against right-handed pitching, Drew Gilbert is the likeliest leadoff option, with Rafael Devers, Jung Hoo Lee and Bryce Eldridge the principal left-handed threats.
Young call-ups have shown they will attack hittable fastballs rather than wait. That could help a command-sharp starter or create quick innings if the zone is loose.
D-backs: a rested bullpen behind a probable rookie starter
The D-backs list José Cabrera as the probable starter, filling the injury-created vacancy in a rotation Lovullo has called “fluid and challenging.” Cabrera has been in Triple-A since July and is likely to be handled carefully. His style is sequencing and attack, and his own summary is “attack, attack, attack,” mlb.com reported.
The supporting cast is healthier in the pen. Eduardo Rodríguez covered seven innings of Wednesday's shutout, so the Diamondbacks needed only two relief innings. Justin Martinez had Wednesday off, while Kevin Ginkel and Taylor Clarke remain the high-leverage names in a flexible closer picture.
The D-backs are missing Ketel Marte, who remains on the injured list with left-knee inflammation, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is still on a rehab assignment. Jordan Lawlar stayed available after a helmet hit Tuesday and homered Wednesday. Corbin Carroll, Lars Nootbaar, Max Kepler and switch-hitting Geraldo Perdomo give the D-backs multiple ways to pressure a right-hander.
Gabriel Moreno is active and the official preview identifies him as a central matchup player against San Francisco. Whether he or James McCann catches Cabrera was not confirmed, but Moreno is the normal offensive choice.
Oracle Park: cool marine air, deep right-center, less routine carry
The forecast calls for dry conditions and an evening low near 59°F, with a westerly breeze around 10–15 mph. Oracle Park's marine air and deep right-center field suppress routine home-run carry, particularly after sunset. The short right-field line can still reward pulled loft from left-handed hitters.
That places more weight on outfield positioning and extra-base hits than on a compact power park. There is no meaningful postponement signal.
Why the D-backs' fresher late innings are the difference
The price treats this nearly even, but the setup is not even. The D-backs have the better overall roster, a substantially fresher bullpen, and a clear late-inning leverage edge. San Francisco's relief unit is compromised by Wednesday's ninth-inning collapse and multiple arms working twice in three days.
Roupp is the more established starter, and Oracle Park should help him manage dangerous contact. But the Giants' patchwork lineup is unlikely to punish a probable rookie enough. Cabrera's main risk is volatility: he may need a roster move, and he projects as a short start.
That short-leash profile points toward the D-backs' rested pen rather than away from it. If the Giants carry a lead into the middle innings, San Francisco's own bridge will be the harder ask.
